I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I
9 i& b( N9 L7 L+ ?am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,
4 v: v Y' n+ V% \5 P2 N- C, yconcerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and3 _* {* q3 p4 q3 I
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them' [! z1 x. W+ z; w: x5 n- n( L
will acquire language earlier and faster.
4 W9 |* m/ s: c2 S' V l) C) f' c4 ^! S+ v' f- `
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
7 A4 U& a6 Z( H4 }( ^. Y30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop) ]1 }1 `9 j5 l
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
S) \3 Y' p5 j: X, X& A$ K( Hsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you" C% d3 m c4 x+ V! d- c0 o$ {
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your
' X" U) w3 Y' u) k$ p2 X4 r+ U4 Xbaby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
; k1 J3 }2 m1 f+ B" {) k1 |. g7 |7 V/ Q2 l; c
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
. I# w& V# z: h" M! M+ v# Bbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and: d6 I! E# \6 w5 l7 B5 f2 Z
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.: s! h* |- X- l
1 d2 b2 l# R( Q: a& H1 _Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
' ?$ x C# [' U" `0 _6 wproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
' ~% R+ C6 y. s6 C+ ~7 T1 hknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to( ]! p6 @/ a0 f, `# M
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.
' M& `/ R5 `; Y+ S. r# p& P
' }! ~8 S) J' NFinally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
; I- j0 \! ^* j7 ~' y+ kthe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.4 g* a, L5 |- _- j
! S& w& d/ `) p. k" ?: H; T! Q
The entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done
: F! b W5 \! y) Lover the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she. \9 G) a2 p* c6 a3 P6 |9 d. T
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will. a" ], m% u f
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
$ t; s, K$ S1 R4 o9 a# f4 won the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
9 Q( F+ u" G" K& l. hAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data
' R5 i& m% _# d+ h3 A5 J* qare stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show- c( N8 H$ h7 c9 O7 _% n( C; ~# ^
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
# N. j, v5 S% |- l" C' Zin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
: U: p5 i- G+ f1 j, j# Ddestroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,. [ h6 g% b3 o1 e) G
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of& r$ U- ~! W' ~$ C+ J
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific; m4 y; ~$ Z a; H( D* r
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child& i) u) @$ a$ ~' \( l# t
and the parents participating in this study.
