Alberta Finance Minister Ted Morton has resigned from cabinet, two days after first planning to do so and after reluctantly agreeing to support a deficit budget.

A source tells The Globe and Mail Mr. Morton resigned on Thursday but remains in the Progressive Conservative caucus.

% s; w8 C/ |) C$ XPremier Ed Stelmach and Mr. Morton, who began the week as Alberta’s two most powerful government officials, are set to present a united face to the party after Mr. Morton called reports of fissures “a figment of the media desire for good stories.” Both men, along with MLA Lloyd Snelgrove, will appear at a press conference in Calgary.
