Edmonton's population grows by 30,000$ T/ f* V) T( b5 U4 e

7 c# u2 T+ R: W3 `EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning. D; c/ \3 M0 _7 U; }- z8 K
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
4 R6 m5 F+ {$ y; x$ x: Q" LThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. / X( ~) L a) N& Z, \& _
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that., K7 h3 O; |0 y2 P
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
