what about clichéd or hackneyed, are they closer? They both mean something by "overuse" but the end results still seem to difer from when I use 肉麻

have you checked the link that sansi posted here? it's a slang dictionary defined by the readers, to some extent it is similar to wikipedia. I believe that languages are alive, for words like "cheesy", this slang dic can give you a much better idea of its real meaning than traditional ones.

cliché really means overused, predictable, 陈词滥调, 了无新意.  for example, in chinese shows, to imply that a woman is pregnant , she will always suddenly rush into the washroom and start to vomit, that's a cliche scene. so cliche!( L" N2 e4 Q9 v/ D3 }) K- C

1 r5 u4 ~8 H8 S4 d6 j% B: X6 K9 e# jcheesy often means "cheap, flimsy and of low quality". However, when it is used to describe food, it usually means "of a lot of cheese"; when describing an emotional/sentimental scenario, it could mean "fake", "of low class",  caused by affectation, which may very much make one to feel "rou ma" , "goose bumps" is just one of its infamous side effects.
