Why wear a poppy

# H2 F5 \! i: P, L4 n9 S2 F4 i And held one forth, but I shook my head
: ]: ~! N# x! @Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare 5 k9 A8 o& [3 w8 _; j# w) n+ j
Her face was old, and lined with care,
- a) q$ x' [  hYet beneath the scars, the years had made
; X0 U' b2 r0 z7 H3 VThere remained a smile that refused to fade. 0 m9 I  r" [, H* g. n# \; z

& t0 E9 Q7 V4 J. w1 R% F1 I3 {A boy came whistling down the street ( x1 j( Q) [* Z
Bounding along on his carefree feet
" E, v3 L5 C6 ~4 T9 r! pHis smile was full of joy and fun6 l1 \1 }% o' E
“Lady” he said, “can I have one? 2 V7 i, j- I- H( D# k" Q
As she pinned it on I heard him say % f1 J  L+ _0 `
“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
& v3 V9 N  H- y$ `The lady smiled in her wistful way
3 W8 X- ?7 B* m" d- i  B* a* GAnd answered “this is remembrance day” 2 B4 Y4 L) @. ]

3 d; w6 b4 {% P9 o“The poppy is the symbol for the, ) f# m+ d- |5 g% n+ G
The gallant men and women who died in the war”.
5 K  d" K- _* ~' p) C “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see”
" |* E& w3 o% s# J4 `" m7 X' Z) ?5 }# Z
“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes, ( ]' ?' R; y& s. }
He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about” 0 Q& g" y1 d' U/ J. l
As the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”,
# P9 ~( k, a7 T7 T% JHe was fine and strong with a boyish smile, 9 E0 u2 B  _% F+ W  X
But he seemed to be with us a such a short while
5 K  U& l! v7 d; i4 n: |1 CWhen the War broke out he went away . e, N/ v$ m" i* i- q
I can still remember his face that day 5 ?5 M% O/ m, t: n
When he smiled at me and said goodbye ! x, Z5 e3 R! |/ {' m
“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry”
2 h1 P& b/ U$ E1 H1 [0 k. E4 D$ \; p# ^' N% m6 O
But the War went on and he had to stay
/ ]) w/ J2 B- l+ U2 }* S+ nAll I could do was wait and pray
3 z; L7 |) k: X& ]: l0 Q; A+ v  _His letters told of an awful fight
% i2 L, x: f) ^1 y' wI can see it still in my dreams at night
5 Q' O& A% X8 B+ }With the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire
3 W6 s5 l9 T' n* O0 pAnd the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire
% f4 g* E& Z" {* N# p" b/ a# T7 OUntil at last the War was won : I: o* h$ l; [
And that is why we wear the poppy son 1 l1 G( h8 x$ c4 W! z

/ `, Q. e, r) gThe small boy turned as if to go . \# k9 `6 e6 Y. T$ z
Then stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know”
: ~  o2 n9 ^- T. QThat sure did sound like an awful fight
) ?) I6 p- b* k “But your son, did he come home all right”? " d3 |! _0 y$ @6 _' D0 K
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head   b+ l# o3 W3 w! J8 z5 m9 ~$ ^
But didn’t speak.
7 x% V$ j& _2 S- O! h7 ^9 r6 @( _2 w6 n: |, j: S5 E/ {# K
I slunk away, head bowed in shame,
  Q! m* l' U0 w8 W  i+ v3 }And if you were me, you’d have done the same, 5 I$ S9 A1 h( I+ O) j( T
For our thanks in giving is often delayed : }2 c% G& M# ~7 Y6 y, H
Though our freedom was bought by the legions who paid. ( w* D; E" {/ G* T8 G8 H8 p1 v" U" Q

" h2 ^0 f; I% O8 j# I) AAnd so, when you see a poppy worn
+ F5 J: T$ n+ uLet us reflect on the burden borne 9 S& g' J7 c2 ?' E' g
By those who gave their precious all / x* ]1 e2 G" _. E7 ~0 z, v
When asked to answer their countries call
/ x: J; z( y" b7 O6 X0 T( A4 X0 MThat we at home, in peace may live
" I& y" j) N& K; F# y2 @Then wear a poppy, remember, and give.
