NOT so long ago, white stilettos were the chavs of the shoe world, the Vicky Pollards of footwear.
Irrepressibly Eighties, they were associated with Ford Cortinas, girls called Sharon,christian louboutin, dodgy pop bands, Babycham and lower-division footballers' wives.
Not any more. Cast aside your prejudices about the shoe that once screamed 'slapper' because this season they are the epitome of elegant fashion.
Take a look at the evidence. When everyone from the prim and proper Rachel Bilson, star of TV's The OC, to moody, mouthy Peaches Geldof is working the white stiletto look, it's time to sit up and take notice.
Jennifer Lopez and Paris Hilton have been blatantly disregarding the old American etiquette that you should never wear white shoes after Labor Day (like our Bank Holiday) in early September.
The only reason they're all doing the white shoe shuffle is because every top cobbler worth his last is showcasing a snow-white shoe in his collection.
From Stuart Weitzman's satin Kiss and Christian Louboutin's white patent peep-toes to Jimmy Choo's Empire, Manolo Blahnik's cut-out leather and Christian Louboutin's covetable Very Prive in ponyskin, they're all at it.
'White shoes in general are an incredibly strong trend this season,' says Karen Felicini-Darboe, designer christian shoes manager at London's Harvey Nichols.
'Gina is doing a white stiletto and we've got a Versace in white leather and some Miu Miu patent peep-toe wedges.' So it's clear that pale is most definitely interesting, but what's behind the resurgence? 'The Sixties monochrome look is a big fashion story this year,' says Karen.
