EDMONTON — Edmonton posted the biggest drop in new home prices in June compared to a year earlier, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.
Contractors’ selling prices fell 11.7 per cent from their June 2008 levels in the Edmonton census metropolitan area.
The next-largest declines were also seen in Western Canada. Saskatoon showed a 12-month drop of 10.4 per cent,, Vancouver dropped 9.1 per cent and Calgary fell eight per cent. Victoria new home prices showed a seven-per-cent year-over-year decrease.

“The decreases in these five western Canadian cities follow a period of significant highs in the new housing price indexes at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008, when strong economic conditions and high demand for new housing pushed up contractors’ selling prices,” said the federal agency.
3 v, s; N4 j( FNationally, contractors’ selling prices decreased 3.3 per cent year-over-year in June, and by 0.2 per cent between May and June.
On a monthly basis, prices fell the most between May and June in Vancouver at 0.9 per cent, followed by Edmonton at 0.8 per cent and Victoria at 0.5 per cent.
