When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university

differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, ( m8 y+ ]) t; [ P( d4 H3 ?
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
3 b9 _$ p9 a5 q1 d- Vand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were 1 W: U: u" P T
asked to look for a residence on open market.9 f1 E: N/ Z4 \1 X, \: N
1 r1 Z0 k( W m$ U" `5 G; wWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
9 ~+ y. I- v; M: sincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
0 O& C7 J7 s1 K+ a* |exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
z; G) Z# J& M7 t1 H# V6 i2 z7 aadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 6 o% S+ O* t6 U9 B9 N4 ^9 Z2 m
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after 6 h8 R( n2 j6 I8 N5 ]
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just 4 ~. r( j4 ~) P w/ d* K
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am . }9 y% f3 D+ M8 p8 J- D# L
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of 7 L" k; B3 W' Y
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
! \/ ]! z$ v$ H Padmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.6 j {* z; L2 k' ^! l4 C) { Q; S8 ~

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of 5 k( s* v* h2 o* x8 S
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
% H( {4 L4 I+ U' G# Y4 z# o+ xfrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
6 F- H) Z; F4 v& @students are the main pillars of research work at the university.
+ Q+ x9 J$ \ x; Z4 ]& M/ b- e! W
% O- h- a, j" J9 @My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
. H" G2 }% i9 G4 }& G# k6 r2 q8 pis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
- C: E" m7 l% B/ N1 kespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take" k. h: J# ]1 O. d
. c+ u4 ? J+ \$ S( I. `; Einitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
) Z) Z6 ]: `2 y# q. j- Pgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
