17. Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another,

21. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

23. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.

25. 'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.

27. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.

; ~* i) X" w' E, x! L28. 'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.

31. That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill.% Y1 D& d" A0 c- K
        “问题就在这里,牧师,”比尔回答说。
! U0 [. |, |6 j# @, N# p32. It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.3 j+ ]3 @% S" a. U1 F- V. v

- r) ^+ v) B0 W. F33. We'll get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar.

34. Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing.

. O, u2 ^, I/ S: Y& S! k6 \7 V35. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.7 O. N1 C+ L4 T. i$ Q/ V' ]
