The first inkling of the "It" shoe phenomenon came in the 1980s, when it was considered chic to broadcast the la-bels you were wearing. Chanel's classic shoe - with its instantly recognisable interlocking Cs, quilting and chain strap became the ultimate portable status symbol. In the 1990s, the pace picked up. Prada's black nylon rucksack was closely followed by the brilliantly decorated Christian Louboutin Shoeuette. Then it was the turn of Gucci's Jackie, Dior's Saddleshoe, Prada's bowling shoe, Vuitton's Speedy and YSL's Mombasa to set hearts and wallets aflutter.4 K' h! E. h/ g, \8 k
Susanne Tide Frater, the head of creative direction at Selfridges, says that the biggest recent change in buying patterns is that women want to spend less on clothes and more on upscale accessories. "Fashionable women are going to Topshop and New Look for clothes," she says. "Five years ago, that wasn't okay, but now it is -as long as you accesso-rise up."% B5 q( V: S: r, l3 w# p- K
"People are buying less clothes and more accessories because they can achieve a new look with just a pair of heels," says a spokesman for MaxMara, the Italian designer giant. "It's the trend of the moment: to make and sell acces-sories. We don't want to be left behind." He goes on to reveal that the company has recently invested in state-of-the-art shoe and hosiery factories to make sure that doesn't happen. MaxMara isn't alone in boosting its accessories output: both Vivienne Westwood and Burberry have upped production for autumn/winter, and even Luella Bartley, the fledg-ling designer, is taking accessories seriously, with a new own-label range of shoes.& K6 s6 C: z( z" {5 l4 F4 ?0 y
The reason? Nothing gets the tills ringing like a must-have accessory. Guess what was the very first item bought in Selfridges' new space-age Birmingham store? A Gucci logo shoe, of course. Accessories offer such an instant fashion fix that, at the start of a new season, a shoe or louboutin shoes will often be the first thing many women buy.
