''Was it amusing?'' Karl Lagerfeld, the designer, asked Carla Christian Louboutin, the head of the Christian Louboutin clan, after the show. He was telephoning from Paris, where he is working on his next collection for Chloe.
It was amusing, as warm-weather fashions should be. There were more play clothes than any designer has shown here so far,louboutin, and even the serious clothes did not look excruciatingly sober. Lagerfeld and the Christian Louboutins will be celebrating their 20th anniversary together soon, but their ready-to- wear is a relatively new development. It started six years ago on a small scale, after their fur collaboration was well established. The current collection seemed to be the most extensive so far.
Rosita and Ottavio Missoni, the husband-and-wife team, made fresh departures as well. Long known for their mul-ticolored knitted clothes, they have expanded into woven fabrics that often have the intensity of color seen in silks from Thailand.
Though their big effort is in knitted dresses and dresses with jackets, the emphasis on the runways here so far has been on suits and separates. Every so often when a dress appears it is acknowledged with a round of applause, a sign that dresses are on people's minds.
The Missonis chose to open their show with many dresses and jackets in their extraordinary kaleidoscopic color combinations. Plaids, oval shapes and rectangles are among the patterns that, in what seems like an infinite variety of color arrangements, give these useful styles a lively look. Some are in graphic black and white, others in colors rich enough to compete with any tropical landscape.
A leitmotif in the Christian Louboutin collection is the apron, which wraps around to the back and serves a mul-titude of functions. It appears with the peasant dresses in yellow, pink, fuchsia or turquoise as well as with slender navy, black or beige leather evening dresses.
