 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason$ w& h4 k6 f+ k x D

/ g6 h+ ]* i0 d* n4 {& u9 P9 t The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 L L: M' I, z1 Z. U3 w; i
to their first ministry, to reopen a church , w! B# f9 w( u x4 s6 `; d
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
$ `3 c ~6 M* c) ~excited about their opportunities. When they saw
& H0 o8 Z e! W' y. T3 etheir church, it was very run down and needed 3 W8 w! A. j& U2 E T
much work. They set a goal to have everything
% _1 `+ Q9 y) e) i ~done in time to have their first service . p: n$ w3 s' h- e) {. O
on Christmas Eve. 1 W2 d( e* K- t+ U( D
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
2 C) }$ B4 V [' k1 L) e1 Ppainting, etc, and on December 18 8 Q( b" s0 V& D+ ]7 C8 s
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. 7 R0 M, r6 M3 ^+ |- s# z% X
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
- ~; o5 r! K! l7 d1 O/ W nrainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 3 c& M$ p$ U, s( ?8 ?! d# W6 V
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
! g' v3 n Y, k- M, _His heart sank when he saw that the roof had0 A, H' |! K, F" T- Z
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about G* k" Q$ { i- D: p: E
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
& B7 i) A2 {0 a8 q" A6 Kof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ! h+ d" ^. \: _$ ] i+ ^
beginning about head high.
4 t: b B6 E1 I; P' f3 P8 XT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, % P+ ^, x4 S) |& Q! m
and not knowing what else to do but postpone ' b( ^. p) R* L
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 4 w1 S/ y! n1 i# O: w
On the way he noticed that a local business was
9 Q* o, n* }. }9 f% W. i- U- V7 shaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
% s* M0 v3 t/ cstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
' F' J8 [; i0 y3 m/ lhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth " _8 ?$ z+ D; j8 \5 B& _* z
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
( N2 p$ w" d0 rembroidered right in the center. It was just " D8 `( k* c# U/ }
9 A0 i$ T1 r* \" n0 h( b# I0 X
. p: K9 \6 @7 \+ ~0 E( A4 l7 X0 m
. ~1 R* V+ F& ?, y1 l; c$ H% S; V; f
$ [, _( ^4 N3 [" q
/ S) s, L" x ~. b. J% T; n
1 L' M9 m, H: i1 Ythe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. $ M3 y. ~3 z; e0 U* E
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
0 A+ ~5 c8 w3 p7 A& h- q" e6 e# |1 cwoman running from the opposite direction was ) I- o C. e! s9 y
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
, x o4 M) l6 d, winvited her to wait in the warm church for 2 j+ G# M" W! B$ q; {
the next bus 45 minutes later.
+ e; w: j/ q0 v. L4 Y; I: |% i% l3 Y7 J) {3 f, U
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
9 e5 f9 D8 m: P# v! Rwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put * w' m4 ~0 h+ @( R# B
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
# _: _" `" \# v: h$ Mcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 4 T; U6 `) C2 t# Q
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center0 u1 H$ y6 q, P$ [8 p
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
& L+ d* v- p; E5 d' t' l1 \she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
9 e; D9 m# _. q* @/ {6 p3 DThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
, j+ n9 _0 G) X7 |the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 x' Z0 _# ^7 O7 Cit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
5 @8 ], H$ Y. T$ ^3 C7 Jmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . & u3 D5 e$ r. O# N- P" e% ^
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
4 Y7 I4 u3 d0 g6 v/ F. }told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The 8 V9 m& c! K5 O$ M$ m. A+ ~
woman explained that before the war she and ) _+ E% y9 R1 m% t9 U1 e
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

) v3 i0 n7 a; _. b% K% J# {When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 4 j- H5 J; g. K
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. ! Z9 `& W+ s- |& G2 t0 n
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
% s( n3 k: x0 B7 A. ]% y- x; E7 Fhusband or her home again. : |6 h: z7 \, N$ Q
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
1 Y: ~: ?) k# O4 i5 u& tbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
/ ^ C/ S! m) D% J) d* lThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That4 H. ^; j) k" A3 m( F
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
% d7 w9 T" i6 ?) g2 d- I6 Cside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
$ w; z6 O. `+ ^7 v% a) pfor the day for a housecleaning job.) h! n; O6 a4 H2 W5 {
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas : a% v' B+ ^, C" E
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the : ^) T S, w9 G( d: B
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ) t' g$ e: y% r
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
0 ]- b& `; y4 \9 K9 _5 zand many said that they would return.. 8 j% O9 X& k. D' z5 _% f
One older man, whom the pastor recognized ! q# } @& s( Q8 ~3 H' P
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the * r& M- w9 t; n- J* ]
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ; e5 \# B B( O1 _1 ~
wasn't leaving. 8 D/ H$ d% V, F3 H: b
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on , L% W0 \9 J$ M% ~- G
the front wall because it was identical to one
) J+ ?% n& ]; K* xthat his wife had made years ago when % m4 } }0 p" \# x6 c0 |
they lived in Austria before the war and how
: b$ D8 y2 h4 ecould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
( [$ N) q7 d5 y4 ^( e5 j' fH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 1 E/ k* h9 |( C/ H' r
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
6 O/ L5 k5 v3 r1 v: @6 @- k' lsupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and0 o* r) Y p4 h$ r' x2 r
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home# r! r0 H9 T9 W( r9 O2 A3 n
again all the 35 years between. ! P2 ^' L$ j! }' i
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
F( P# R$ |, `+ v' xtake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten $ B+ N" a% @2 q' ?
Island and to the same house where the pastor , M7 v: R$ l5 o' f
had taken the woman three days earlier.
) ]- I( n7 N% h9 e1 fHe helped the man climb the three flights of y- I- \7 t/ k- V; M- N" L/ M
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on% f. J8 |% J; T
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas - O2 `( i. ]* G# _/ o7 p
reunion he could ever imagine.
