: t# s* T! E" y* I0 qGE Money announced Wednesday it will be closing its Edmonton call centre in early 2009 and laying off 250 employees.

The job losses will occur in stages over the next several months.% l* y2 V2 {4 O7 ]" O/ n* {( }

A number of workers were told their last day will be Feb. 25, but some will stay on after that date to help the centre close down operations, said Kim Warburton, vice-president of communications for GE Canada.

"Just like everywhere else, we're all facing a lot of challenges from a competitive perspective, but also a very challenging economy," Warburton said. "After a very, very careful review of our operations, we have decided to make some consolidations."! A3 ` U- E6 K# E% d$ w

Other Canadian call centres in Ontario and B.C. are having smaller "realignments," she said, but did not offer details.
