When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

in one of the Boardwalk's high rise buildings (Galbraith House) for

600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international

9 U3 L6 p% T7 w) j1 Dthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
9 [, c' b4 J' |; Rand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
/ `6 d$ Y ]" a6 o$ C; Fasked to look for a residence on open market.

% N( L) V5 w- l& N$ Z+ Y7 sWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
) P1 K# T' |) B; `; Eincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid ' S5 k, q* X! d
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
) O8 Y/ |0 d+ U1 }) w1 B5 u' cadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
: A' m7 K3 Q' Y' ~3 L=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
( h: @* y1 d5 z, K! i0 G) \tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just / L$ ~% _( X z9 I5 G9 f; C p
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
5 U Y+ p5 a/ igetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of % n- w6 h4 r# j9 h- I
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was 6 ~6 t( G2 \* g/ r. T8 t
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.8 [; i* D E6 c
+ m' u+ W. ]0 B) _) N, R4 lAlso have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of & K9 i+ f: w' M. m e5 q4 Q
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants ( x) ?2 l V& P4 Q$ X4 m- p2 V
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate : b; p8 X+ P8 c2 e
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

7 ~; f6 O1 J8 w# p$ i! ]. g. ]My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention 9 r$ y9 P# d5 Z
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and # i3 j+ d, {! E! t4 l
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
) L2 |+ R" ^$ P
! m" X, q- g/ B" _1 f4 U" j2 n7 ~initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
$ ^$ o; Q) X/ rgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?) w: S* D! {! m
